Senator Andy Kim Secures Nearly $100 Million for New Jersey

Washington, D.C. – Today, Senator Andy Kim (D-NJ) announced he secured $97.5 million in federal funding for projects across New Jersey. This funding comes after months of meetings with New Jersey leaders on the ground, discussing local project needs to help residents and their communities. These conversations resulted in federal funding going to 98 New Jersey projects that’ll upgrade New Jersey’s infrastructure, support our elders, help families in need, and more.

“New Jersey has seen our taxpayer dollars held hostage by this Administration, it’s important to me that we return some of it home to actually help our working families,” said Senator Andy Kim. “This funding comes from a process of collaboration – we hear about the needs of community and work with our partners to help deliver the resources they need to make life better. I’m proud to work with my colleagues to bring these dollars home and will continue to fight to bring more back for New Jersey in years to come.”

Funded projects will help seniors age gracefully, improve students’ literacy, deliver support to New Jersey’s most vulnerable, and upgrade the state’s transportation and infrastructure network.

Funding highlights from the bipartisan negotiations in the House and Senate include:

  • $2,915,000 – to expand the Minne B. Veal Community Center in Edison to accommodate increased senior services like recreation programs, social services, and classes, with a particular focus on technology education and assistance.
  • $300,000 –to build 24 housing units in Monmouth County as part of Lunch Break’s Family Promise Apartments program, which will also provide a foundational structure for residents to participate in an intensive living skills training that includes benefits coordination, vocational assessment and training, family therapy, job search assistance, financial management and budgeting.
  • $3,150,000 – to support the development of a new Community Excellence Center in Plainfield which will be a multi-faceted center designed to better serve residents while offering a wide variety of educational programs, workforce development classes, and health monitoring assistance.
  • $2,000,000 – to construct a new NJ Turnpike exit ramp for trucks along the Probasco Road freight bypass in East Windsor, which will decrease traffic overall and decrease the number of trucks on residential roads, greatly increasing community safety.
  • $1,500,000 – to increase roadway safety along JFK Boulevard, one of the busiest roadways in Hudson County. Improvements will include updated crosswalks to increase visibility, additional centerline barriers and other safety improvements to make crossing easier for pedestrians.
  • $3,500,000 – to create a new intermodal ferry terminal in Carteret and improve service for commuters who travel into New York City each day, providing new, affordable public transit while helping decrease traffic congestion on Carteret’s streets.
  • $2,000,000 – to rebuild the Manhattan Avenue Pedestrian Bridge in Union City so it is ADA compliant and easier to use for the thousands of residents who cross it every day.
  • $3,200,000 – to help create Paterson’s Homeless Hub Project, which will act as Paterson’s homeless shelter and not only provide homeless residents with a safe space to stay, but also create direct access to organizations that can help them seek treatment for drug use, and gain access to transitional housing and providers of Paterson wraparound services.
